Hyundai CE Showcases Hydrogen-Fueled Excavator Concept

The HW155H hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered wheeled excavator shows how beneficial hydrogen can be for a carbon-free future.

Hyundai CE Unveils Hydrogen-Powered HW155H Excavator Concept at bauma 2025

Hyundai Construction Equipment introduced a near-production prototype of its HW155H wheeled excavator, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, at bauma 2025. This innovative model aims to showcase the role hydrogen technology could play in achieving zero-emission construction operations in the years ahead.

Understanding Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between stored hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen. This process produces only water vapor as a byproduct. The electricity generated is used on-demand to power electric motors or electrically driven hydraulic systems, making it a clean and efficient energy source.

Development and Technical Details

The HW155H project is the result of a collaboration between Hyundai Construction Equipment and Hyundai Motor Company, which has extensive experience in alternative powertrains for vehicles. This concept machine is equipped with a single hydrogen fuel cell capable of delivering up to 90 kW of power. It drives an electric motor that powers the excavator’s hydraulic system.

Hydrogen Safety and Storage Innovation

Hydrogen is considered a safe fuel with a higher ignition temperature compared to traditional fuels like diesel and gasoline. Being significantly lighter than air, it disperses quickly and safely in open environments. Hyundai has pioneered a low-pressure, high-density hydrogen storage technology that allows the HW155H to operate for up to 12 hours on a single charge. This system uses metal hydride to store hydrogen and is integrated into the excavator’s counterweight area, effectively utilizing space while enhancing safety.

A Practical Solution for Emission-Free Construction

This advanced hydrogen storage method—doubling the capacity of standard tanks—makes the HW155H a practical choice for long-duration construction projects in sectors such as infrastructure, civil engineering, and building. Hyundai’s breakthrough technology positions hydrogen as a viable alternative energy source on global job sites.
