Super-Extended Reach: Caterpillar’s Excavator Built for Challenging Job Sites

The LRE kit can be installed on any Cat 395 model, enhancing its capabilities for a variety of excavation tasks.

Caterpillar’s 395 Long Reach Excavator (LRE) is built for efficiency in extended-reach applications such as dredging, ditch clearing, and maintaining canals and waterways.

With an impressive digging depth of nearly 22 meters and a ground-level reach of up to 28 meters, the 395 LRE delivers powerful performance. Caterpillar classifies it as a super-long-reach machine, balancing its extended boom and stick design with exceptional digging force.

Expanding Capabilities with the Long Reach Excavator

Designed for demanding underwater applications, the Long Reach Excavator (LRE) unlocks new possibilities. Available as a retrofit kit, it includes fully waterproofed sensor boxes, ensuring seamless operation of advanced next-generation technologies like the Cat Payload Management System, Cat 2D Grade Control, and Cat 2D E-fence, which helps maintain the front linkage within a defined work area.

To enhance stability, Caterpillar has upgraded the undercarriage with a 1.33-meter car body extension, significantly improving balance. Ground clearance has also been increased by 85 mm, while the operator benefits from a 24 cm higher cab position, improving visibility on the job site.

The counterweight design further reinforces stability, with its mass increased by nearly 40% to 21.5 metric tons. Despite the added weight, the compact dimensions remain unchanged, preserving the excavator’s tail ratio while enhancing performance in challenging environments.

Cat 395 LRE: Expanding Reach with an Aftermarket Kit

The Cat 395 Long Reach Excavator (LRE) is now available as an aftermarket retrofit kit, extending the capabilities of any standard 395 model. This kit includes an 11.8-meter stick, a 15.5-meter boom, and a CV linkage designed to integrate seamlessly with the new components. It also features boom cylinders and a specially engineered bucket with a capacity of up to 2 cubic meters, depending on material density.

“This retrofit option enhances the standard 395’s reach and versatility while maintaining its renowned power, speed, and fuel efficiency,” says Vincent Migeotte, Caterpillar’s senior product and sales consultant. “With this kit, operators can take on an expanded range of excavation applications without compromising performance.”

Beyond increased reach, Caterpillar has prioritized safety and visibility. Additional handrails improve access and egress, while standard rear and side-view cameras can be upgraded to a 360-degree system for enhanced situational awareness.

Migeotte also emphasizes that the retrofit preserves all the key advantages of the Cat 395, including low operating costs, fuel efficiency, and minimal maintenance requirements. “Operators get the same reliability and return on investment they expect from a Cat machine, with the added benefit of long-reach capabilities.”
