New Truck Features Include 23,000-Pound Rear Axle and 325-HP Cummins B6.7 Engine
Mack Trucks Expands MD Series with 23,000-Pound Rear Axle and 325-HP Cummins Engine
Mack Trucks is enhancing its MD Series lineup by introducing a 23,000-pound rear axle and a Cummins B6.7 engine with up to 325 horsepower.
Increased Capability for Heavy-Duty Applications
Designed with a Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of up to 23,000 pounds, the upgraded axle and suspension provide greater hauling capacity. These enhancements particularly benefit refuse packers with rear loaders ranging from 11 to 20 yards, as well as Mack MD models configured as water trucks carrying 2,000 to 2,500 gallons.
Improved Performance and Towing Power
Paired with the 325-HP Cummins engine and Allison 3000RDS transmission, the Mack MD Series now offers enhanced towing capability for trailer applications.
-
Mack MD6 (Class 6) – GVWR of 25,995 pounds
-
Mack MD7 (Class 7) – GVWR of 33,000 pounds
-
Federal Excise Tax Exemption – Both models are exempt from the 12% Federal Excise Tax.
The MD6 model also allows non-CDL operation for non-hazardous payloads.
Built for Versatile Vocational Needs
Designed for a wide range of trucking applications—including dry van/refrigerated, stake/flatbed, dump, and tank truck vocations—the Mack MD Series is engineered for medium-duty operations. Available in a 4×2 configuration, the MD6 and MD7 models feature a sharp wheel cut for improved maneuverability in tight urban settings.
Mack recently updated the MD Series cab to a larger 107-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab measurement, drawing design inspiration from the bold styling of the Mack Anthem highway model.
Enhanced Comfort and Safety Features
The MD Series now includes premium interior updates, such as:
-
Satin aluminum trim
-
Improved seating with lumbar support
-
Enhanced LED lighting
-
New steering wheel controls for cruise control, telephone, and audio functions
Safety upgrades include:
-
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Automatic Traction Control
-
Radio mute in reverse
-
Park brake alarm for added security
Optimized for Vocational Applications
The updated MD Series incorporates pre-wired body builder connections, a relocated air dryer, and industry-standard Cab-to-Axle (CA) dimensions to accommodate a broader range of body installations.
Meeting Industry Demands
Tim Wrinkle, Mack’s Vice President of Vocational and Medium Duty, highlighted the advantages of the new upgrades:
“The 23,000-pound rear axle expands applications in the vocational market, with refuse and construction reaping the most benefits. The 325-horsepower engine offers carriers tackling longer routes or hilly terrains a more durable and reliable powertrain. Given the demands on dump bodies, hook lifts, and roll-offs, the heavier axle provides greater durability, while the increased horsepower enhances overall performance.”
With these enhancements, the Mack MD Series continues to evolve, delivering greater power, durability, and versatility for a wide range of vocational applications.
